INTENDED USE
The TOXO Ag Rapid Test is intended for the qualitative detection of Toxoplasma gondii antigen in feces collected from veterinary patients. It is designed for point-of-care veterinary use to aid in the detection of active Toxoplasma infection (active shedding), particularly in cats, which are the definitive host. Because it detects parasite antigen rather than host antibody, a positive result indicates current shedding rather than past exposure; results must be interpreted together with clinical signs and other diagnostics.
PRINCIPLE
The TOXO Ag Rapid Test is a lateral-flow immunochromatographic assay based on colloidal gold labeling. The test cassette contains a nitrocellulose membrane with a test (T) line pre-coated with capture antibody and a control (C) line. When the processed feces is added to the sample well, it migrates by capillary action. If the target Toxoplasma gondii antigen is present, it binds the gold-conjugated antibody and is captured at the T line, forming a visible colored band. The C line should always appear, confirming the assay ran correctly. Results are read visually by the naked eye within the stated time; no instrument is required.
SPECIMEN
The test uses a fresh fecal sample collected from the animal. Collect feces with the provided swab from the anus or freshly passed stool and mix thoroughly with the supplied assay buffer before application. Use fresh samples and test promptly; Toxoplasma oocyst shedding can be intermittent, so a negative result in a symptomatic animal may warrant repeat testing.
